Audacity is free software, developed by a group of volunteers and distributed under the
GNU General Public License (GPL)

GNU software is not just free of cost (like "free beer"). It is free as in freedom (like "free speech"). Free software gives you the freedom to use a program, study how it works, improve it, and share it with others. For more information, visit the Free Software Foundation.

Programs like Audacity are also called open source software, because their source code is available for anyone to study or use. There are thousands of other free and open source programs, including the Mozilla web browser (Firefox), the LibreOffice suite, and entire operating systems - such as Linux and my personal favourite FreeBSD.

Step 1:

Download the latest stable version of Audacity.

Audacity 2.0.2

Where to find Audacity:

http://audacity.sourceforge.net

Step 2:

Once Audacity has completed downloading, install it by double clicking on the icon with your mouse, and follow the prompts.

Step 3:

If you wish to use MP3s, download the lame mp3 encoder from: http://audacity.sourceforge.net/download/windows
and follow the install instructions.

The lame MP3 encoder is preferred because the original Frauenhoffer MP3 encoder is not free and royalties are ment to be paid to the Frauenhoffer institute if you make any money from an MP3 file format.

Step 4:

The LADSPA plugins are also useful for advanced work. For extra functionality, download them from here: LADSPA plugins 0.4.15 installer
